The (12-18) Canisius women’s team played their first game Thursday vs (2-28) Saint Peter’s in the MAAC tournament at Springfield, MA. They won 79-58. Canisius shot a season best 51 percent from the floor and made 11 3 pointers. When Canisius is making their 3’s at 58% and holding the opposition to 37% FG from the field and 35% from three, there is no team, not even Marist who can beat them. Guard Ashley Durham led the Griffs with 15 points and forward Jen Lenox had 10 points. With the win the Lady Griffs moved onto Fridays game vs Iona. The Griffs was upended by the (19-11) Gaels of Iona as they lost 76-58. Canisius gave up a MAAC record 36 points to Danila Martinez who played 35 minutes. She was cooking! Joy Adams chipped in with 15 points and 18 rebounds as she dominated the paint with her play. Canisius only had 2 players in double figures which were Jamie Ruttle with 13 points and Ashley Durham with 10 points. Canisius has won a postseason game for the 12th time in the last 14 years. Canisius finished the season with a 12-19 record. Iona went onto lose to Marist in the MAAC Championship this morning 72-48.
The men of Canisius avoided the first round games in their MAAC tournament that started last Friday. They were the No. 5 seed in the tournament there highest seed since 1999. Canisius met eventual MAAC champion Iona in the Quarterfinals. The highest scoring duo in the nation Sean Armand and MAAC player of the year Mo-Mo Jones were the main reasons for Canisius doom on Saturday afternoon. Armand and Jones combined for 57 points. They also combined for 25-26 from the free throw line as they were major pillars in beating Canisius 89-85. Canisius finished the year with an 18-13 record in coach Jim Baron’s first year. Forward Chris Manhertz had a double-double, MAAC player of the year finalist Billy Baron led the Griffs with 24 points. In their final games as a Griff, seniors Harold Washington and Isaac Sosa finished with 17 points and 5 points respectively. The Griffs had a very successful season beating every team in the MAAC at least once. Great seasons to both the women’s and men’s team from Canisius College. Both teams should be as good but even better next year. “The Fanatic”
