Second-year head softball coach Trena Peel has announced the addition of seven players for next year's 2015-16 season that have all signed National Letters of Intent.
"I am ecstatic about this recruiting class that my staff and I were able to put together," said Peel. "We not only found talented athletes, we found great people with very supportive parents. These seven players are eager to get here and earn an opportunity to be instant game changers. I believe that they will put us in a position to compete for a championship every year."
Lace Smith – Valrico, FL
Smith is another gifted pitcher that joins this recruiting class out of Florida. She pitched her team a Class 8A State Championship and she was named first-team All-Western Florida, as well as All-Conference and All-District. Smith was named the Pitcher of the Year for Class 8A by the Florida Dairy Farmers and was named the Player of the Year by both the Tampa Tribune and the Tampa Times.
"Lace is going to bring some Florida sunshine to our circle," said Peel. "She brings a lot of championship experience to the team. She was a dominate force in the circle for her high school and travel ball team. I expect for her to come and do the same thing here at UB. She will be a fan favorite."
Allison Power – Parker, CO
A pitcher from Pondarosa High School, Power was named the 2014 Colorado Gatorade Player of the Year. A first-team All-State selection, Power was named the Continental Conference Player of the Year in both 2013 and 2014. She has been named the National Pitcher of the Week by MaxPreps and she has led her team to a third place finish in the state in 2013 and a fifth place finish in both 2012 and 2014. Power led the entire state of Colorado in strikeouts in 2013 and 2014.
"We are very lucky to have Ally joining our team," said Peel. "It's great to see another standout player go big time from my home state of Colorado. Ally is a very athletic pitcher. Her high school statistics speak for themselves as to what she can do in the circle and in the box. She will be an exciting pitcher for fans to watch."
Shailia Warren – Lakeland, FL
Warren has been a four-year captain for her softball team and was named the Most Valuable player in 2014 and she was named defensive player of the year in 2013. A utility player that can be found almost anywhere on the field, Warren helped lead her school to the final four during her junior season. Having played travel softball since the age of six, Warren has played in at ASA Nationals a total of five times.
"I am delighted that I will be able to coach Shailia," said Peel. "She is going to be a force to reckon with in this conference. She can play every position on the field except for pitcher and catcher. She is a triple threat from the left side of the plate and I like that she always plays with that fire in her eye."
Catrell Robertson – Costa Mesa, CA
Robertson was named the Offensive Player of the Year during her sophomore season as she helped lead her school to a League Championship in 2012. As a freshman, Robertson had the highest batting average as well as on base percentage on her team. She has been part of many travel ball tournament championships, including Colorado Sparkler, JO Class Las Vegas, ASA State Qualifier 18u and Premier Qualifer 18u.
Catrell is going to bring some Cali swag behind the plate," said Peel. "She is an outstanding catcher that will bring a lot of positive energy to our pitching staff. Her power hitting will defiantly earn her way into our record books. The sky is the limit for Catrell."
Courtney Gilbert – Delhi, Ontario
Gilbert is a multi-sport athlete, who was named the Senior Female Athlete of the Year by the Delhi District Secondary School. She twice won a provincial gold medal, while finishing fifth at Canadian Nationals this past season. Gilbert has been named the MBP of the Queen of Diamonds showcase and also won a gold medal at the Ontario summer games in 2012. In addition to her softball accomplishments, Gilbert has also had success in basketball, badminton, tennis, soccer, and track and field.
"We crossed the Canadian border to get Courtney," said Peel. "She is going to be a joy to coach. She has the potential to be our international sensation. Her power hitting and versatility in the infield and behind the plate will be a great addition to our team."
Taylor Light – Hamlin, NY
Light is a local product from the Brockport, NY area, where she has already earned four varsity letter in softball, prior to beginning her senior season. Also a standout in volleyball and basketball, Light has been named a scholar athlete in all three sports. She has been an All-County selection in each of the last two years as she helped pitch her team to sectional championships in 2013 and 2014. Light has also been part of the Team New Era Diamond Girls '97 Swiatek, who were 16u National Runners Up in 2014
"We are always happy when we can get great players from own backyard," said Peel. "Taylor Light is our hometown girl. Her 6'1" frame is going to be a great addition to our pitching staff. She will provide depth to our pitching staff and see some time at first base. It's going to be fun to see her blossom over the next four years."
Brieanna Baker – Oneonta, NY
Baker was named the Daily Star Player of the Year this past season and was a STAC All-Conference selection as she helped her school reach the section finals for the first time in school history. She was a SYSSWA All-State First Team Selection and she has racked up over 500 strikeouts in the last two seasons in the circle. As a sophomore, she set school records for strikeouts and victories. Baker also saw time in the outfield during her freshman year. During both her freshman and sophomore seasons, she was named a Daily News All-Star. Baker has also been extremely successful in both soccer and basketball during her high school career.
"We are very happy to have another New Yorker joining our team," said Peel. "Bri has a lot of God given raw talent. She was a three sport athlete in high school and I think she will be a true utility player for us. Her speed on the bases and in the outfield will be a big contributing factor us."
These seven players will join a team that already has high expectations for the upcoming year after Peel and her staff guided the Bulls to a MAC East Division Title and their first appearance in the MAC Title game.
UB will begin the 2015 season on February 7 when they head to Troy, Alabama for their season-opening tournament.
