Erie CC Athletics Wins NJCAA Region III Community Service Award

Posted September 26th, 2012 12:49pm

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Sept. 26 – The Erie Community College athletics department has been named the recipient of the NJCAA Region III Community Service Award.
The award, in its second year, recognizes member institutions for efforts involving local communities. This award was created by the athletic directors of the 26 community colleges in Region III to recognize their peers who strive for excellence in all areas of athletics.
"Community service is part of the education process here. One does not just learn in the classroom but also on the athletics fields and when interacting with others, particularly with those less fortunate," ECC president Jack Quinn said. "In addition to the commitment of being a full-time student, together with their responsibilities to their teams, our student-athletes have donated thousands of hours the past few years to charities. A few years ago, I asked all of our coaches to initiate a ‘public service’ component and the response has been extremely positive, shown by their actions. This award is proof of our commitment to our community."
In addition to receiving the Community Service award, ECC was honored with the Sportsmanship Award at the Region III athletics directors meeting held recently at Lake Placid, N.Y.
"In addition to our student-athletes accomplishing and enjoying outstanding records on the playing fields, along with improved team grade-point averages in the classroom during the 2011-12 school year, each program—due to the direction of their respective coach—was also able to 'get involved' in community service," ECC athletics director Peter Jerebko said. "Erie Community College, under the priority of President Quinn, initiated an atmosphere of community service, and I am so proud that the member institutions of our region recognized our sport teams’ leadership within the college’s goal to give back. Our student-athletes supported such local charitable organizations as Carly's Crossing, Habitat for Humanity, The Belle Center, the Food Bank of WNY, Cheektowaga Youth Hockey and various cancer research programs."
